THERE were contrasting winners of the two Junior/Young Rider classes staged on Tuesday as the second of the Young Eventhorse Series qualifiers was held at Scarteen.

A very confident Carla Williamson went into Section A on the back of a win in the CCI1*-Intro at Millstreet on Karolita O and another in the first YES qualifier at Tullylish. There and here she rode her mother Janet’s Powers (305 points), a seven-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding by Colandro.

Belline Equestrian-based Caitie Slater bagged an RDS qualifying ticket when second with Richard Ames’s Belline LEB Noble Warrior (297.5), a five-year-old grey ISH gelding by OBOS Quality 004 out of a Colin Diamond mare, with Anna Murphy doing likewise in third on board her mother Naomi’s black ISH gelding Drumrankin Hiboy (297), a six-year-old by Tolan R out of a Loch Cruise dam.

Caitlin Woods didn’t compete at Tullylish while before then, she and her father Michael’s Greygrove Delight were automatically eliminated from the CCIYH2*-S at Millstreet having picked up 20 show jumping penalties.

On a day when there were plenty of eliminations over the five-year-old YES track, there were no such problems for Woods and the six-year-old ISH gelding. They posted a second-place ridden display score of 108 and then recorded an excellent clear round (160 points) which warranted a joint top-place score of 29 for suitability and potential and which resulted in their winning total of 297.

Ciara O’Connor filled the runner-up slot on the second of the Tullylish winners, her aunt Sharon’s home-bred ISH gelding Ashwood Rio (289.5), a six-year-old Dignified van’t Zorgvliet bay. The second RDS ticket on offer therefore went to the third-placed pairing of Lucy McCarthy and her mother Aoife’s seven-year-old Coolcorran Cool As A Breeze (287.5), a traditionally-bred ISH gelding by Island Commander out of a Coolcorran Cool Diamond mare.

Although there was a lot of rain the previous night, three was just a bit of drizzle on Tuesday morning and the ground held up well. Hopefully, conditions will be on a par at Scarteen today when the Ryans host the second of the Dublin Connemara and Irish Draught qualifiers.
