HOLLIE Smith wasn’t the only member of her family to feature at their local Northern Region event, The Clare, last Saturday as her father, Steven, recorded two wins and was placed once from five rides at EI110 level.

Smith senior added time penalties in both jumping phases to his winning dressage score (27.5) when landing the EI110 (Open) on Gail McNab’s Irish Sport Horse gelding Greenhall Gold Dust (37.5), a seven-year-old Dignified van’t Zorgvliet gelding. Two of the seven starters were eliminated in the show jumping phase while Smith and CJO Kann Surprise slipped up on the flat after fence 13B across the country.

The double was achieved in the 11-runner EI110 where Smith again led after the Vanda Stewart-judged dressage phase (23.5), this time on Campbell McLean’s ISH gelding Annaghmore Cornoko, and held on to win comfortably, despite the addition of time penalties in the jumping phases on a total of 38.7.

Won twice

The Aoife Healion-bred Annaghmore Cornoko is a six-year-old from the first crop of HHS Cornet out of the KWPN-registered mare Annaghmore Temptress (by Iroko). From nine starts at EI100 level, the bay won twice and was never out of the top six.

Stable jockey at the Smith brothers’ Gilford yard, Casey Webb finished second here when fastest across the country (8.4 time penalties) on Sean Moher’s Diamond Discovery nine-year-old Nelgara Lucy Locket (41.7), one of four ISH mares she was placed on for their breeders on Saturday.

“The Clare was really well-presented,” commented Webb. “The effort by Becky, Declan and their team was much appreciated by us all. It was a great education for the horses with the sponsors’ signs, beautifully-dressed fences and plenty for them to see.”

Webb also filled the runner-up slot in the EI100 on Robert and Jane Huey’s home-bred Traditional Irish Horse mare Knockaleery Mill Leat, a six-year-old grey by Watermill Swatch, whose total of 37.6 included 2.8 cross-country time penalties.

The win in this 12-runner class went to Myah McLean on board the 10-year-old chesnut gelding Emile Ford who led after the Dave Lee-judged dressage phase on 29.3, picking up an additional four penalties for time over the fixed fences. This was a first success for the combination.
