STEVEN Smith recorded one win from his five rides at the re-scheduled Eventing Ireland Northern Region one-day event at Tyrella on Bank Holiday Monday, that coming in the 21-runner EI110, where he claimed the honours on the Irish Sport Horse gelding Lachain Lance (Lancelot - Lachain Cruise Dancer, by Cruising), who was making his seasonal debut.
The Gilford-based rider and the bay seven-year-old posted a penalty score of 24 in the Rosie Gomes-judged dressage phase, as did Michael O’Toole on Obsession AKA Ballybeg Obsession. Both left the show jumping arena without any additional penalties, but Smith was the faster across the country (four time penalties) to claim the win ahead of O’Toole (10.4), who had to settle for second on 34.4.
Two of the quickest cross-country rounds (1.2 time penalties) were recorded by thoroughbreds, the higher-placed of these being the Nicola Ennis-partnered Devils Cape who, with four show jumping penalties, finished third on 35.
Meanwhile, the dressage winners on 23.8, Gillian Beale King and Bonmahon Triomphant, who left all the coloured poles intact, were eliminated when parting company on the approach to fence five on the final leg. Two other combinations were eliminated on this phase and there was one retirement.
Victoria Clarke recorded an all-the-way win in the EI110 (Open), completing on her Julie Green-awarded dressage score (27) on Toni Quail’s 16-year-old ISH gelding Wellan Summertime (Mermus R - Wellan Cavalier, by Cavalier Royale).
With a fence down show jumping and 1.6 cross-country time penalties, Victoria Brown finished second on Dunrath Navigator (33.4) while Amanda Goldsbury was a close-up third on Cooley Clarissma (33.8). Only half of the 10 starters came through the cross-country finish. Two understandably as they withdrew, while there were two eliminations and one retirement.
Despite a fence down show jumping, a fast cross-country round ensured Isabel Fitzgerald a win in the nine-runner EI110 (J) with the 17-year-old ISH gelding OLS Pixie Hollow (37.5); Kitty Cullen likewise picked up four show jumping penalties en route to victory in the nine-strong EI110 (P) with the 10-year-old Connemara mare Greenaun Russel (39.3); and Denis Currie recorded an all-the-way win with his 16-year-old ISH gelding Merlot (36.2) in the six-runner EI110 (Amateur).
