THE show jumping phase also exerted a stronger than usual influence on results among the youth classes at Barnadown last weekend, and nowhere more so than in the Overlander EI110(J).
Not one of the eight competitors succeeded in posting a clear round, and the addition of only four faults to Jonty Purcell and the Capri Van Overis-sired Hillcrest Home Run’s fourth-placed dressage score was good enough to see them climb into the top spot on a total score of 41.5.
Dressage leaders Ailbhe Hally and Gailes Lucky Charm dropped out of contention with penalties in both jumping phases, while Abigail Kenny and Hogan The Brave dropped from second to fourth when they incurred 11.2 penalties in the grass arena. Katie McCarville’s speedy cross-country clear aboard Heidi Brabazon’s Red Ace saw them take second on 46.3 despite leaving two coloured rails on the floor, ahead of Annabelle Dunne and HFS Rock Shandy, third on 47.4.
Abigail’s sister Brooke Kenny and her Connemara pony Cupid’s Magic Shadow went uncontested in the Overlander EI110(P), where they too found the show jumping phase a challenge and incurred 16 faults, but there was a larger entry in the Kehoe Brothers Machinery EI100(P), where eight combinations started.
Here, the winner was Jessica Coveney having her first ride on her mother Ruth Furney’s experienced OBOS Quality-sired Forans Daylight, double clear on their dressage score of 27.8. First phase leaders Katie McCarville and Blackfort Melody dropped to fourth (33.3) when they left two rails on the floor, but both Sadie Orton with Candyman Joe (31.3) and Nia Webbon with Ashwood Ramiro Diamond (31.8) also kept clean sheets to claim second and third respectively.
Alison Dunne took an all-the-way win in the Overlander EI110(J) riding the thoroughbred Garrybritt Susie. They added nothing to their dressage score of 31.3 to finish ahead of runners-up Lilymai Walsh and the Irish Draught Chapel Hill, also double clear on 34.5. Beth Coveney added another good result to her family’s tally when third with the Sligo Candy Boy-sired Ballinrobe on 36.3.
In the Coffee Express EI90(P), Lily Corrigan took her second consecutive win with the 20-year-old 101 Dalmatians on a total score of 28.
