THERE were 24 starters in the EI90 at the re-scheduled Eventing Ireland Northern Region event on Easter Monday at Tyrella, where Emily Turley recorded a clear-cut, all-the-way win on her mother Sarah’s Welsh gelding Budore Mystic Legend (Llanveynoe Blaze of Glory - Thorneyside Dark Legend, by Thorneyside Flyer).
Turley and the 19-year-old bay, who headed Janet Hall’s dressage leaderboard on 21.5 penalties, competed 10 times in EI90 (P) company in 2025, recording three wins and numerous placings. They concluded the campaign with a second-place finish in the EI90 (P) national championship at Barnadown.
On Monday, they completed on their first phase score, as did the second-placed pairing of Jennifer Gilchrist with the nine-year-old thoroughbred mare Millstream Mahler (27.3).
Charlie Watson finished a close-up third with the similarly-aged traditionally-bred ISH mare Toberpatrick Gentle Dove, whose total of 27.4 included 2.4 cross-country time penalties.
Combination
One combination was withdrawn before the cross-country phase, where there was one elimination.
Riding for her mother Mary, Lucy Ferris finished first and second on two Connemaras in the seven-strong EI90 (P), where the dressage phase was judged by Janet Hall.
Ferris, EI’s youth ambassador for 2026, claimed the honours on the 10-year-old gelding How Ya Sammy (Woodfield Sammy - Robe Cheeky Lass, by Robe Earl), whose total of 25.8 included four show jumping penalties, and filled the runner-up slot with the 16-year-old mare Duncarbery Cascade, who completed on her first phase score (27).
The well-known combination of Katie McKee and her 11-year-old skewbald gelding Water Paint comfortably saw off six rivals when completing on their winning dressage score (22.8) in the EI90, where Julie Coombs placed second on her first phase score (31) with Bruno Mars.
First appearance
Abby Cumiskey marked her first appearance under EI rules since early May 2024 by landing the 14-runner EI80 on her Coreen Abernethy-awarded dressage score (28.8 penalties) with the thoroughbred gelding Getaway Stevie (Getaway - Fox Theatre, by King’s Theatre), who was making his EI debut.
The unraced seven-year-old, who is a half-brother to three track winners, finished just ahead of the dressage leader, the Lynsey Kennedy-partnered Izzey Miyake, whose total of 31.8 included four show jumping penalties. Four combinations were eliminated, one in the show jumping phase.
