QUOTES:

Reigning Olympic champion Christian Kukuk (GER) after a difficult ride in Thursday’s first team round with Just Be Gentle: “I would like to forget about it immediately because it was really embarrassing. I cannot remember when I rode such a bad round. I am speechless… I had a really bad blackout, it’s an absolute miracle that the horse jumped a clear round, honestly. I lost my focus and concentration so that is very, very disappointing. The clear for the team is the best we can take from this round and I hope she did not lose too much of her trust in me.”

Scott Brash (GBR) on losing his rein down to the huge triple combination: “What went through my head? ‘Oh s**t’! I managed to lose my rein after the oxer; I felt like an amateur. I managed to grab it back at the last moment and asked Folie to jump the triple from where I was. What an amazing attitude and fight she showed to be able to jump through that triple clear.”

Course designer Santiago Varela talking about his tracks during the week: “On the second day, one hour before start, it was raining so much and we took a decision to measure [the track] on the outside. This was a technical decision from my side and, it is true that at the end, with the sun that arrived after the second horse, it was probably a mistake. But the reality is, at the time that I took the decision, it was the right one. After that, they jumped very well; the team final was super nice when they changed the order. Today they did a great job and I am very proud to be the course designer for these riders and horses and for this organising committee.”

Paris Olympic silver medalist and 2023 European Champion Steve Guerdat (SUI): “It might sound stupid but I am somewhat happy that I didn’t win the gold in Paris because I’m very motivated to keep on trying and to keep on working and to come back in three years’ time, and in seven years’ time and in 11 years’ time to try to get the second gold medal [he won gold at London 2012]. I don’t think I entered the arena once since Paris and the commentator has spoken about it – they talk about Olympic champion in London, or sometimes European champion but I’m proud of it, and I know what it means to have a medal.”

Donald Whitaker (GBR) finished 10th individually: “I think the course actually rode a little bit more difficult than what it looks like it’s riding. There are quite a lot of options from the first line to the last. And I thought it was going to be a little bit more difficult than what the way they’re jumping it.”

Bertram Allen (IRL): “We were just knocking on the door this week. I thought he [Qonquest de Rigo] jumped very good today, I rode a bit better too. He just went a little bit green at the combination but he will have learned a lot this week. It just didn’t fall the way we planned for the week. I don’t know if he will go to Dublin, he’s only nine – that’s a Monday morning problem I think!”

Denis Lynch (IRL):“It was a last-minute call up and I was delighted to get it. We did exactly what we thought we could do; he was nice and relaxed and came out of there very very good. You can’t make a Land Rover into a Ferarri! He is a very big horse, he is a steady horse so I can only take so much out of him. [I’m] very happy with that.”

Janika Sprunger (SUI) on having her 2021 Olympic champion husband, Henrik von Eckermann, on the ground to help her. “It’s nice for once but doesn’t need to be like this every week! Normally we are both riding, but now his full focus is on me so that gives me a lot of confidence and I am really happy he is here with me.”
