THE current reserve European champion young rider Tom Wachman capped another successful week at the Gallagher Dublin Horse Show was winning Sunday’s CSIO5* Speed Championship in the spectacular Laya Arena.
Second last into the ring, Wachman just kept galloping all around the track with the 11-year-old mare Obora’s Laura (Luidam x Non Stop), who is owned by his family’s Coolmore Showjumping, and perfect open distances to the fences set at 1.50m height, saw him cross the finish line in 65.81 seconds.
That time was just 0.13 of a second faster than his teammate Jordan Coyle after he set the target when he was the very first rider into the ring with King Kannan GP, the horse who had already won two classes earlier in the week. From the first to go until nearly the last, it was a thrilling competition once again.
“She’s very good mare,” Wachman told The Irish Field. “She’s very careful and she tries very hard. We have her since she was eight and she’s won a lot of classes. She won a good class in Hamburg this year. She won a WEF Challenge Cup over in Wellington at the beginning of the year. I had a good draw in the speed championship and after Jordan [Coyle] went first, I thought he’d be very difficult to beat so just took all the risk and she really helped me out, and she answered every question.
“I am so delighted with how the week has gone. It’s very tough to win in Dublin and to get two wins here this week is very special. The crowd has been brilliant.”
It was an Irish one-two-three-four after Mikey Pender took the final spot on the podium with Mercedes-Benz HHS Cyprus, a 10-year-old mare by Cornet Obolensky x Acorado who is home-bred by Marion Hughes. Their time was 66.70 and good enough to keep ahead of Billy Twomey and the Irish Sport Horse Corrindubh Brother In Arms (Sligo Candy Boy x Pacino), bred by Noel Ruane, in fourth place on 67.48.
