ON Saturday, the RDS Simmonscourt stands were filled for the Fair-Share ESG Ltd 1.25-1.30m Young Rider Championship. Taking this title was Jamie Clarke aboard Victoria Clarke’s Sydney Pmd. Last to go, Clarke knew that he needed to go for it in a series of tight lines and cheered on by the crowd, he delivered the winning round in a time of 30.70.
The eight-year-old mare was formerly owned by Aisling Doherty and was bred by Patrick O’Dea. She is by Quidam Junior and out of Conchita De Sabare Z.
Speaking after the win, Clarke said: “The win was unexpected as an injury had ruled me out of jumping since I qualified. I was back in time for Dublin but was just thankful just to be able to compete.
“As I was last to go, I knew I just had to go for it as I had nothing to lose. I would like to thank my mum and dad for all the help that they give me.”
As expected, the class went down to the wire, with six booking their place against the clock and just three delivering double clears.
First to go against the clock, Bridin Doyle and Boleybawn Rigaletto set the time to beat, clear in 38.76 seconds.
No stranger to this type of pressure, James Derwin reduced this target with Amos L Z delivering a clear in 31.77, which would prove enough for the reserve title and as a result dropped Doyle into third. Next up, Katie Nallon and Mulvin Cliodam put in a blistering round, but it came at price as four faults in 29.70 meant she had to settle for eventual fourth.
Conrad Sweeney and Domino Van De Valhoeve also proved out of luck with a pole on the ground in 35.28 for fifth place. It wasn’t the day Iseult Fleming and Cristallo Boy had hoped for, with elimination halting their hope of a win, but the pair still secured a creditable sixth-place finish.
