THE North Munster Region of Dressage Ireland ran the second leg of their summer league last Sunday week at Clonshire, where judges Ann Glynn (List 3A) and Paula Geiger (List 3) had a relatively easy day.
Geiger assessed those forward in three of the four league classes, facing nine combinations in two of these. Her overall winner of the Preliminary DI8 was Saibh Prenderville, who achieved 69.23% for her test on the Irish Sport Horse mare Sunny Girl, a 143cm 18-year-old grey by Wings Of Justice.
That combination withdrew from the Novice DI27A, where Geiger awarded her highest score (67.07) to Judith Wurmel riding the eight-year-old chesnut ISH mare Dreamhill Doria (Ballineen It’s William - Dreamhill Donna, by Huntingfield Rebel).
Just two combinations appeared before Geiger in the Medium DI65, where Ana Hughes comfortably saw off her sole rival when scoring 66.09 on Sligo Dark Knight (Lancelot - Doonaveeragh Souverin, by Aldatus Z). Hughes and her 17-year-old ISH gelding then recorded an uncontested win in front of the same judge in the non-league Medium DI73.
Hughes was also the only starter in the Elementary league class, the DI53 judged by Ann Glynn, but here she rode her 13-year-old bay gelding Ballycahane Billy (68).
Glynn started her day judging the non-league Preliminary DI15, where her overall leaderboard was topped on 68.39 by Ellen McGrath and her seven-year-old traditionally-bred ISH gelding Beau Louis (Lionwood Kinsales Lad - Lulu Belle Cruise, by Cruise On), who was competing for the first time under DI rules.
Also competing in a non-league class, Sinead McGrath - no relation - likewise topped Glynn’s overall scores in the Novice DI24A with her traditional home-bred ISH gelding Ballyj Max (Black Hero - Memories Of Emily, by Pilsudski). That five-year-old’s three-year-older full-brother Ballyj Ed finished second in the BE100 grassroots championship at Badminton earlier this month.
Glynn also judged the non-league FEI Pony Rider Team Test, where the only starter was Lucy Hope Ryan with Lucy Cusack’s 16-year-old Dutch-bred mare Diamand Anfrody (65.43). That young rider and Pretty Patterns were narrowly beaten into second (65.45) in the FEI Eventing 2* B by Hannah Goold and her mother Elaine’s seven-year-old dun gelding Paddys Best (65.68) who, last weekend, finished second in the CCIP2*-S at Millstreet.
Geiger also judged some of the non-league classes, such as the Preliminary DI5A, where her overall leaderboard was topped by Emma Hennigan on Re Invest (64.82), the Pony Club Pre-Novice test where Vincent O’Hara recorded an uncontested win on Grageelagh Panda Bear (66.75) and the Para Grade Novice A test where a score of 71.30 was recorded by the sole starter, Ally Gabbett with the 13-year-old Connemara gelding Dunguaire Mick (Banks Timber - Rocky Girl, by Kylemore Rocky).
Geiger also judged two combinations in both Trailblazers’ classes. Her winner of the Under 10s’ class was Maeve McGinn riding Ruby (69.17), while Tommy Wakfer recorded the higher score (70.38) to win the Junior Preliminary on his mother Sarah’s British Riding Pony Carmens Novello.
Wakfer and the 13-year-old Chiddock Stop Watch gelding finished second in their section of the Intermediate dressage at the Area 17 Barrier Animal Health Spring Festival at Castle Irvine, Necarne late last month when they represented the Killultagh, Old Rock and Chichester Hunt Branch.
