OUTSIDE of the five-star action at the Defender Burghley Horse Trials, Ireland’s Susie Berry had a super second-place finish in the five-year-old young event horse class riding Ron and Catherine Pearson’s Purple Rain (by Poker De Mariposa TN). The competitive class was won by Piggy March riding Quantum Leap.
Caroline Powell rode Chris Mann’s ISH gelding WLS Ravencourt (by Cristo bred by Gwen Kinsella) into fourth place here, as well as her own Cornascriebe Lockdown (ISH by Orestus bred by Carol Armstrong) into seventh.
Kate Derwin also waved the Irish flag in this class, securing sixth with Fuerty ROC, an ISH gelding by Denzel Vant Meulenhof bred by Michael Bailey. The final Irish connection in the top 10 here was Rachael Thompson (GBR), who rode the ISH mare Bellavalent (by Valent bred by J W Rosbotham) into eighth place.
In the four-year-old section, Milchem Equestrian rider Jason Doerflinger also brought home a fourth place for Ireland with Ralph Conroy’s Tyson home-bred Milchem Giovanni.This horse is now consigned for the Goresbridge Go for Gold 2025 edition.
Kitty King (GBR) was second in this class with the ISH gelding Parc All The Hype (by Hype bred by John Fitzgerald), while third place went to another ISH, Waffle, bred by Winifred Noone and ridden by Amelia White.
This class was won by Max Warburton on Patron Of Keros, with Irish riders Patrick Whelan seventh on Tomgar Valour, Cathal Daniels ninth on Tullibards Benny’s Night Star and Harry Horgan 10th on HHE Cool Touch.
In the exciting three-phase 90cm Burghley Gold Cup, Ireland’s Nancy Lyons Teehan was first with Newydd Lady Marmalade and, in the 80cm, she was fourth with Dartans Seoda Ban. Second in the 90cm class was Evie Kennedy with Little Dromin Phoenix. Meanwhile, in the 1m pony class, it was a family affair when Nancy’s cousin Ruby Ward won with Noble Banksy.
Tipperary Area IPS congratulated Kennedy by saying: “To lead after dressage and working hunter, and then show such skill and determination in the show jumping to secure their championship placing, is a truly outstanding achievement. Evie, you have done yourself, your pony and Tipperary proud. We’re bursting with pride here at Tipperary Area IPS.”
