MARY King, who hardly needs any introduction having represented Britain in six Olympic Games and won Badminton twice and Burghley once, taught a clinic at Danescroft recently.

This was Mary’s first visit to Northern Ireland since riding at Necarne in the early 90s. Tara and Karen Dixon had the idea to invite Mary over to stay so they could organise the clinic, kindly hosted by Michael Dobbs and Leah Knight. The massive outdoor arena had a full set of show jumps and numerous cross-country fences, making it the perfect training ground. Five full groups enjoyed an hour and a half each of Mary’s expertise and knowledge, helping them progress and develop. Not only was it beneficial for the riders, but also a few people came along to watch and learn.

The groups ranged from amateurs competing at 80s up to intermediate and four-star rider Janie Cairns brought three horses along, taking maximum benefit of what was on offer. Apart from the chilly wind, riders actually managed to stay dry and have a thoroughly enjoyable day.

“It was so exciting to have a lesson with someone I have looked up to since I was a kid. Mary was great. Simple instruction that made big differences to my horses and my riding. My horses all loved the lessons, as did I,” Janie Cairns said.

“It was a very informative and interesting training session, with one of the legends from the sport of eventing. I loved every minute of it,” said amateur rider Nicky Nesbitt.

“We had the most fabulous lesson with Mary King! We learnt a lot and had so much fun with the others in the group. Thanks to Tara and Karen for organising such a brilliant day, with one of the biggest legends from Eventing,” said EI90 rider, Suzi Hill.

“I loved the lesson with Mary. It was very special to meet such a legend, I have admired her for many years. Once I got over the intimidation of riding in front of her, the lesson was fabulous. I came away with three clear things to work on, which was ideal,” EI100 rider Berni Muirhead said.
