THE All Ireland Polo Club in Dublin’s Phoenix Park played host to an outstanding day of sport and philanthropy on Sunday, September 7th, with a Charity Polo Lunch in aid of The Down Syndrome Centre.
This year’s event built on the success of previous years, continuing to grow in scale and spirit. The inspiration to support The Down Syndrome Centre came following a Leopardstown luncheon, where Derville Meade and Sophie Barrett - whose youngest son Seve (3) has Down Syndrome - discussed bringing the charity into focus for 2025. Their input, along with the commitment of many others, helped shape a remarkable occasion that combined sport, style and generosity.
The polo showcased a unique racing twist, with four teams competing: National Hunt Jockeys vs. National Hunt Trainers and Flat Jockeys vs. Flat Trainers. Among those who took part were Tony Martin, Gavin Cromwell, Fozzy Stack, Michael O’Callaghan, Ross O’Sullivan, Ciaran Murphy, Danny Mullins, Gary Carroll, Sam Ewing, Keith Donoghue, Chris Hayes and Donagh Meyler. The matches were expertly brought to life by commentary from Nick Nugent and Paul Nolan.
Fully prepared
The horses and polo training were generously provided by Bishopland Polo Club, ensuring all players were fully prepared for the competition. The jockeys, who were the victorious team, were awarded Treo Eile gilets and Dublin Crystal plaques, kindly sponsored by Treo Eile and Derville Meade.
Guests enjoyed a champagne reception, courtesy of Tankardstown House, followed by superb entertainment from soloist Shane O’Neill and a first-class lunch also provided by Tankardstown House. A lively charity auction, conducted by world-renowned bloodstock auctioneer Nick Nugent, added to the afternoon’s success.

The event was supported by the generous sponsorship of Sherry Fitzgerald, NFP An Aon Company, Matheson, and Dunnes Stores. Behind the scenes, the dedication of Tadhg Carolan and Derville Meade was instrumental in making the day possible.
The Polo Charity Lunch was a resounding success, raising significant funds for The Down Syndrome Centre, who provide vital help to children with Down Syndrome and their families, while providing a memorable day of sporting excellence, social enjoyment and community spirit.
