THERE were 80 catalogued entries on the day for the Ireland West Foal Championship held at Claremorris recently, with many compliments given about the standard on show.
There was €6,000 in prize money on offer, funded by the Breeding Grant Initiative under National Breeding Services, with thanks to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and delivered by Horse Sport Ireland.
This initiative has been warmly welcomed by breeders, particularly in the West of Ireland, where equine breeding plays a vital role in local economies, rural sustainability and Ireland’s global reputation for producing world-class sport horses.
Noel Coleman, commentator on the day, spoke to a number of exhibitors, judges and show directors. “Support like this makes a real difference,” said one Mayo-based breeder. “It encourages us to invest in quality bloodlines.”
“This kind of support allows us to aim higher,” said another Galway-based breeder. “We’re seeing foals of exceptional quality, with strong conformation and athleticism.”
“The standard of foals presented was truly exceptional,” remarked one of the judging panel. “We were impressed not only by the conformation and movement, but also by the clear evidence of thoughtful breeding decisions. It’s encouraging to see such quality emerging from the West of Ireland - these young horses have real potential for future success in sport.”
“We were thrilled to see such a strong turnout and an exceptional calibre of foals this year,” said Liam Lynskey, show director. “The €6,000 prize money, made possible through the Breeding Grant Initiative, has clearly motivated breeders.
“The West of Ireland continues to produce foals of outstanding quality, and it’s a privilege to showcase that talent here in Claremorris,” Claremorris Equestrian Centre owner, Charles Hanley said.
