THE mounted stewards on duty at the North Down Hunt point-to-point at Kirkistown on Saturday didn’t have much work to do with just two fallers during the day, both coming at the second last fence in the final race.

However, their mounts received a lot of attention from racegoers and deservedly so being well turned-out, smart types. Honorary whip Charlie McPoland rode the hunt horse Danny, who is in his fifth season with the pack, while he also bred the eye-catching grey partnered by Barry Jones.

Barry, huntsman of the North Downs since May, purchased the Irish Draught to turn over but is in no hurry to move him on as he thinks the four-year-old is a very special horse. The grey by Star Kingdom out of Huntingfield Lilly Laughton (by Attwood Black Laughton), has been named Max by Lacey, two-and-a-half-year-old daughter of Barry and his wife Laura and older sister to 10-month-old Faith.
