CO Tipperary trainer Edward O’Grady, who saddled a handicap hurdle winner, the Paul Townend-ridden Act Of God, at Bellewstown last Wednesday week, didn’t have any runners last Sunday but members of his extended family were in winning form.
Edward’s daughter Rosie Mae and grandson Jasper Kelly were both in action at the Eventing Ireland one-day at Blackstairs in Co Wexford where they took one another on in the EI100 (P). Here, Rosie Mae came out on top as she claimed the honours when completing on her dressage score with Deirdre Loughran’s home-bred Westside Mirah gelding, Wilderwood Storm (32.3).
Jasper, who had to settle for second on his mother Lucy’s pure-bred Connemara gelding Coltstown Diamond (33), had two other rides on the day. The 15-year-old finished third in the EI100 (J) on Tanya Lock’s Connemara mare Rathcline Moonlight Girl but recorded a comprehensive victory in the EI110 (P) on board Maria Tyrrell’s Fiona’s Fionn, a 13-year-old Connemara gelding by Monaghanstown Fionn.
While Jasper was accompanied to Blackstairs by his father Jed, his 12-year-old brother Ned spent two days with Lucy at the Connolly’s Red Mills/Irish Pony Club national eventing championships at Tattersalls. Representing the Shillelagh Branch at Junior level, he won his Arena dressage (on a penalty score of 24.3) on Saturday and while he later had a disappointing show jumping round, he had a super ride cross-country the following afternoon with Tinnecarrig Milo.
The season is not over yet for Ned and the 10-year-old dun gelding as they are due to compete at the IPC’s national dressage day at Spruce Lodge (where eight-year-old brother Tristan will also be in action), the Irish Pony Society hunter pony show at Spruce Lodge, the IPC’s minimus championships, the Lambertstown Derby show and Balmoral Show where Ned will also ride Rowdown Archer.
Among the huge number of competitors at Tattersalls at the weekend was the Kellys’ cousin Hogan Byrne who, on board Rosie Mae’s former ride Doonkinane Splash, was a member of the Kildare Green squad who finished second in the Under 12s’ team competition. Helping out with the grooming duties for both families was the eldest of the Kelly brothers, Freddie, who now has more of an interest in rugby and sailing.
