THE Donard Glen Equestrian Club hosted over 100 participants in the quaint village of Donard in Co Wicklow for its monthly run. The club, which donates to local charities, has proved to be a real hit with all levels of riders, not only from Donard but right across the county.
This month, volunteers spent three weeks preparing to make this one to remember.
The course, which took in over 20km of beautiful countryside included over 100 fences, some of which were man-made and others which were natural. The club, which was set up over 25 years ago, is run by volunteers and is made possible due willingness of farmers to use their farmland.
On the day, a big mixture of riders – children, adults and even trainers looking to school thoroughbreds – turned out. Open to all levels, riders choose what obstacles they wish to jump. On their return, participants were treated to soup and sandwiches in the local hall.
Speaking after the event, a spokesperson for the committee said: “The event was a great success and we hope that this will make a huge impact on the funds which we give to our local charities. We would like to thank all the volunteers that made the event possible and to the local farmers that facilitated the event. Farmers allow us access to the land, three weeks prior to the event and remove stock on the day of the event, so that participants can move freely through the course.
“We would also like to thank those who participated and respected the land and the facilities. We encourage all horse enthusiasts to join in and our next ride out is on September 29th. For more information, please contact us through our facebook page Donardglenequestrian.”
