THE annual Dressage Ireland judges gala held at Spruce Lodge on Thursday, September 8th was presented by renowned international trainer Ferdi Eilberg and retired international dressage judge Gisela Holstein.
The theme of the Gala was ‘releasing the horse’s potential’.
Demonstration riders included Melanie Young (Sorbet) and Sam Deverell (Annaharvey Springbok) from Eventing Ireland, Para rider Rosemary Gaffney (Bink) and representing Dressage Ireland were Anne Marie Dunphy (Urbanus), Heike Holstein (Sambuca), Sarah Mellor (Lets Dance) and Belinda Brereton (Galaxy Moone).
A packed audience of judges, trainers and enthusiasts was treated to a fascinating insight into the art of training and judging. Dressage tests from Novice to Grand Prix were judged aloud by Holstein so the audience could hear her marks and comments.
After each test, Eilberg took over and pointed out why marks were lost and what was needed to improve them. Within minutes he transformed each and every combination.
The audience were captivated by Eilberg’s understanding of horse psychology and exercises needed to release its potential as a gymnastic athlete.
Eilberg’s take-home message was “energise the horse and it will find its balance and natural outline.”
Holstein agreed, saying “this is what the judge is looking for, the dressage test is a reflection of the training.”
There was unanimous agreement that this format was beneficial for judges, riders and trainers.
