SHE may have only finished fourth in the EI90 class with Class Booze Cruise but Kathy Charlton easily won the ‘biggest smile of the day’ competition at Rosanna on Sunday following Oliver Townend’s success at the Land Rover Burghley horse trials on Ballaghmor Class.

In partnership with Judy Tobin, Kathy purchased the Noel Hickey-bred grey as a three-year-old at the first Elite Sale of Event Horses at Tattersalls in September 2010. The Courage II gelding was in the wildcard supplementary catalogue and was consigned to the sale by Kedrah House Stud about a month after finishing reserve in the three-year-old potential event horse championship at Dublin.

The new owners hunted Ballaghmor Class with both the Fingal Harriers and the Ward Union Staghounds over the winter and then produced him through the 2011 Future Event Horse League with Kathy riding him at Forth Mountain, Ravensdale and Rincoola. He got into to the final of the Millstreet Discovery and, although selected for that year’s Goresbridge Go For Gold Sale, was sold to Townend beforehand.

Class Booze Cruise, a five-year-old gelding by Crosstown Dancer out of the Cruising mare Tisara Cruise, has been selected for this year’s Go For Gold dispersal as has Charlton’s Match My Class who finished third, on his dressage score, in the CNC1* on Sunday under Cathal Daniels. This six-year-old VDL Arkansas gelding is out of the thoroughbred mare Bowriver Molly (by Insan). Also heading for the sale from Charlton’s Co Carlow yard is a three-year-old by Cavalier Royale.
