THERE was enormous support for the recent charity ride and auction, organised by the South Union Foxhounds, Co Cork, in aid of the Alex Ott Appeal. This was the first of several charity rides to be held by various hunts all with the same aim, to raise as much money as possible for the injured horseman and his young family.

Ott sustained a very serious injury while exercising a horse near his Meelin, Newmarket, Co Cork home on November 19th last and remains in hospital.

Anxious to help in any way possible, members of the South Union Foxhounds, Mike and Noirin O’Connell, coined the slogan “Trott for Ott” and the event grew wings.

Over 200 riders from the age of eight to 83 turned out to support the Alex Ott Appeal. They rode for four hours through spectacular scenery, washing their horses off in the sea at Garrettstown, a few riders also took an involuntary plunge, before returning to the Speckled Door for food and beverages.

An auction and raffle was held, thanks to the kind sponsorship of numerous businesses and individuals. The result to date is that the sum of €22,535.00 has been lodged into the appeal fund and there’s more to follow.

Donal Lordan, whip of South Union Foxhounds, and one of the organisers of the event, said: “It’s days like today when you realise what a fantastic community we live in.”

The South Union Foxhounds thanked landowners, sponsors and all those who turned out both on horseback and on foot, who made the day such a success.

Alex and his family wish to thank all for their efforts and he is overwhelmed by their kind actions.
