LITTLE did I think when I was asked to say a few words about Ger for the article Dickie Power wrote about him in The Irish Field last November that, less than two months later, I would be asked to do the same for his obituary.
Little did I also think when he rang me the day before the Buttevant meet in December and we discussed where we would go, which was always such an easy task as he knew everywhere and everyone, that it would turn out to be his last meet.
It is so hard to believe that he is gone.
I am so glad that, at least, he got to read and see in that article for himself, whilst he was still alive, how extraordinarily highly thought of he was by all of us.
Ger charmed everyone he came into contact with, whether adults or children, hunting or non-hunting.
He meant so many different things to so many different people.
While his ability, professionalism and perfectionism as a Huntsman will be such an enormous loss, personally, it will always be his smile and humour that I will remember and will miss so very much.
It made every day out with him a great one no matter what happened.
When we were hunting in Liscarroll last year, we came across an absolutely enormous double bank.
As Ger steadied himself for it, and facing imminent catastrophe, he turned to us with a smile and said, “I will see you lads”.
We will see you Ger.
