CAN you name the four bones in this cross-section (pictured) of the equine hoof?

We’ll give you some clues to start you off.

Look closely at all of the bones and let your eye get used to where they start and end.

Use the ‘stare and observe’ method. Staring is usually rude but not here - stare all you like!

First of all, you’ll see that there are three separate bones from the top of the image down - separated by two curvy lines. Now those three bones all begin with a ‘P’ and are also numbered 1, 2, 3.

If you don’t have a book at home to help you, look it up on the internet and fill in the name and number over each bone.

Next can you spot the small bone – roughly a boat-shape - sitting inside the hoof capsule on what looks like a white spongy material. What’s the name of this little bone that can cause big trouble for your pony if it becomes sore?

And while you are looking this up, fill in the proper name of the spongy material. (Hint: part of this name is something you can sit on!).
