POLO PATRONS CUP FINAL

PEGUS Horse Feeds dominated the field earlier this month (Saturday-Sunday, July 14th-15th) in the Patrons Cup 0 to 2 Goal tournament at Bunclody Polo Club in Wexford, taking on three teams from around the country to win the coveted trophy.

David Stone, David J. Stone, Mark Stone and David Hanlon shut out River Slaney until the third chukka when a short-lived run of goals opened for Robert Hogg, Nick Murphy, William Clarke and Rob Hampson.

The qualifying match ended though for River Slaney on three goals to six from Pegus.

Meanwhile Bunclody’s Paddy Casey, Kieran Doyle, Julie Kavanagh and Alejo Aita Tagle were losing their qualifier to Rocklow due to an early goal from Mark Ronan, a score-line that would hold until Tagle’s goal in the third chukka was followed with another from Julie Kavanagh. She went on to score again and with another on an assist from Alejo Tagle in the fourth chukka, Bunclody was in the final on a score of four goals to three, the two additional goals from River Slaney due to Paddy Casey and Kieran Doyle.

The Pegus team leader David Stone later said that the team was losing in the final against Bunclody, and with goals produced by Julie Kavanagh and Paddy Casey, the game seemed a foregone conclusion until David J. Stone slipped away from close marking by the opposition. A pair of Bunclody fouls allowed room for successful penalty hits on goal by David J. Stone and the weak spot in the host team’s defensive line was exposed. “At some point, they (Bunclody) just gave up and you could see that,” said David Stone when he spoke with The Irish Field shortly after the final. “They were leading in the first and second (chukka) and then we got our game together.”

The superior speed and agility of the Pegus ponies may have had a lot to do with the team’s success as well, David J. Stone’s successful penalty hits on goal opening up the way to a rout that ended with seven goals to the two scored early in the final by Bunclody.

SLANEY WIN

River Slaney went on to win the subsidiary final against Rocklow on a score of eight goals to four.

Meanwhile, Sixt Rent-a-Car won the Blue Rock Security Cup -4 to -1 Goal tournament, shutting out Rits in four chukkas in the final with eight goals to nil while relegating qualifying match losers the Red Devils to the low goal subsidiary final.

The Red Devils earned success after being relegated to the low goal round-robin final with 12 goals earned to nine from Bishopland and three from Valley Farm.
