David Stone Jr and his brother Mark, Siobhan Herbst and Jack Armstrong of Pegus were elated after their win, having been unable to secure any victory at the venue last season. Speaking afterwards Armstrong said: “We were happy because we didn’t win anything in Dublin last year. We had a little monkey on our back about it. We won in other places but never here.”

While 12 goals accumulated by the Pegus team over the two days of polo were as a a result of team effort, Armstrong singled out David Stone Jr for particular prise.

“Although it was a team effort, David Stone Jr stood out,” he said.

The Tyrone team of Eamonn Laverty and his son Dan, Paul Ronan and Facundo Matilla began to build a new team in 2013 and even though it is still early days in this season, the improvement is already noticeable. Tyrone finished second in the high goal tournament, scoring nine accumulated goals accrued over two days. Much of the credit must go to young Dan Laverty, who scored the majority of the tournament goals, along with Facundo Matilla.

The younger McGuinness will be one to watch in his first season of polo, playing alongside Colm Kelliher, Michael Connolly and Joe O’Connell. Horseware ended the tournament with seven and a half goals, the half-point added in recognition of the team’s handicap average in comparison to the higher-handicapped Tyrone and Pegus Horse Feed.
