LAST Sunday’s SOCK (Supporting Ovarian Cancer Knowledge) team show jumping challenge proved the most successful yet.

A record 34 teams converged on the Cheval Riding Club grounds in Jordanstown for a day of top-class action which, along with a raffle, barbeque, cake sale and dog show, raised €7,300 for the charity.

Despite the increased competition, however, it was a case of déjà vu with Laura Carrick, on board My Foxy Lass, leading the latest version of the Oddsocks team to its sixth consecutive success.

Imelda Keating once again presented the Jane Keating memorial trophy to the victorious captain whose teammates this year were Nuala Stafford (Mistify Me), Claire O’Dwyer (Cut Above) and Ita Kinahan (La Perle). The four were members of the Cheval team which qualified from the North East Region of the Association of Irish Riding Clubs for the Horseware team show jumping championships at the Dublin Horse Show where, sadly, fortune went against them on the day.

Under the watchful eye of judge Christine Walsh, assisted by Tracey Byrne, jumping started at 10am on Sunday and, at the end of two rounds, four teams were on a zero score while six were on four faults.

With placings from 1-10, thanks to very generous sponsorship from the Horse Mad Store, Equipet, TRI, AKB, White’s Agri and Aisling Mitchell, to name but a few, all 10 teams went through to the jump-off where Carrick set an unbeatable time of 28.29secs.

Led by locally-based Sandra Hannigan, who was home clear in 29 seconds flat, the Socktastic team finished in the runner-up spot ahead of the Fiesty Fillies & A Fella foursome with The Ogrechievers, who won the Horseplay.ie best dressed prize, rounding off the top four. James McGuire of Meath Gold was crowned Mackey leading rider of the show.
