THREE days of medium goal polo chalked up another international win for Tom MacGuinness and Horseware Ireland, at the Santa Maria Tournament, Sotogrande, Spain (Friday-Saturday, 24th-26th May).

The winner of the Gladiator Polo League at Palm Beach, USA in April, this time Horseware wasn’t the only team from Ireland in the tournament.

“There was an All-Irish semi-final, Tyrone against Horseware, and we finally beat them six (goals) to four,” Tom MacGuinness, told The Irish Field on Monday. “(Tyrone patron Eamonn Laverty took a bit of a tumble but he is alright. I am going to get him an airbag for Christmas!”

Horseware Ireland took on 25/Monte in the first leg of the tournament, beating the Argentine team with three goals scored to the half-goal handicap differential, calculated from team averages.

MacGuinness, along with James Connolly, Jock Thompson and Jamie Le Hardy won their second match of the day against CSP Ltd from Guards Polo Club in London on six goals to one and a half.

Laverty took his fall during the tournament semi-final, playing with son Dan Laverty along with Facundo Matilla and David Gariador, going on to lose against Horseware.

The tournament final was against Golden Goose Deluxe Brand and Horseware won on a score of 10 goals to four and a half.

MacGuinness added: “It is always great to win but it is even better when the team clicks and everyone has their part and plays it. That is special, that’s polo. The weather was beautiful, the fields were amazing and the horses were in top form.”

MacGuinness has been named as the new AIPC vice president and will be back with the Horseware team in Phoenix Park this summer.
