From: Ballinabranna, Co Carlow

Place of Work: Toberton Lodge, Johnstown, Naas, Co Kildare

Job title: Instructor

Qualifications: BHSAI

How long have you been teaching?Toberton Lodge was set up by my parents in 1994 and I have been teaching there ever since. I also teach regularly at Pony Club rallies.

What attracted you to this line of work? I started teaching in Greenhills Riding School as a teenager. I have always enjoyed the relationships that you build with your pupils. People learn to ride for such a variety of reasons. You get to be part of their journey and see them achieve personal goals. I have been very lucky to have been taught by some fantastic instructors over the years. I like to think that learning from them, has given me the skills that are required to do my job well.

Experience in the equestrian industry:I competed successfully in eventing and showing mostly in my youth, however my main focus now is dressage and I still compete regularly in this discipline.

What you most enjoy about teaching? We have a large variety of clients in Toberton from seven to 70 years old. It’s great seeing the progression of riders over the months or years they are with us.

Everyone’s goals are different, so for some people jumping a round of 1.10m is the dream, others are happy to just to canter around the arena. It’s my role to try help everyone to achieve these goals, having a bit of fun along the way.

What does your teaching involve?I teach groups and individuals. Some people prefer to ride on their own but most of our lessons are group based. You can learn a lot from watching each other!

Also, it’s a hobby for the majority for our clients so interaction with others adds to the social side of the lesson. Most of my private lessons are for competitive dressage riders.

What is the most challenging part of your job? Irish weather is very challenging. Teaching out in all conditions can be tough but if you have good waterproof gear and a smile then you can usually get through it!

What advice would you give someone thinking of pursuing this role? If you’re looking for a 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday job, then working as instructor is not for you! However, if you love working with people and enjoy a challenge, then go for it.
