There is nothing Yorkshire’s Robert Walker likes better than to win a major title on home turf and he did just that a fortnight ago when the former Dublin in-hand supreme Caesars Palace claimed the hunter championship at Bramham International Horse Trials.

Jill Day’s middleweight winner Caesars Palace has now extended his winning run to 10 wins in all, the Emperor Augustus five-year-old remaining unbeaten over two seasons throughout his novice and open classes.

Walker almost made it two wins at Bramham with another rising star His Lordship, another five-year-old bought by Jill Day, this son of Tasset bred by the Doyle Brothers standing second in the lightweights.

Heading a huge class of lightweights and taking the reserve was Camilla Stowell-Davies’ The Kings Speech who was ridden by his producer Charles Le Moignan, this seven-year-old also Irish-bred out of Cloonlative Lady.

Le Moignan also rode Redbridge Tiny Tim to win the heavyweights. The Montpelier Sea View six-year-old, bred by Mylie Mills, was a four-year-old winner at Dublin and is now enjoying a wonderfully successful campaign on the British circuit. The strapping black gelding recently securing one of the early Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) tickets at North East Counties.

After a successful career in the (flat) weight classes with Danielle Heath, Paulette Cooper’s Bloomfield Basil has made the transition to working hunter sections. The Harlequin Du Carel seven-year-old won on his debut over fences at Barton and he added to his winning tally when heading the novice class at Bramham.

On a roll is Katie Jerram who has amassed a huge ribbon haul over the past couple of weeks. Her top lightweight and ladies’ ride About Town added another championship to his enviable tally at South of England.

Bred by Brigit Kellagh out of Harry’s Diamond, this Flaming Feather seven-year-old has really stepped up to the mark after the retirement of Jerram’s prolific Dunbeacon at HOYS last October. Also winning for Jerram was the five-year-old Kings Court, an impressive rising star by Kings Master also out of Harry’s Diamond who headed his novice section.

Shane O’Neill, who now has Harry’s Diamond, was delighted to hear of the winning double and has made contact with Katie.

Adding to the stable’s wins was Deborah Curtis’s Made In Ireland, the Master Imp seven-year-old winning his small riding horse section.

On the opening day of Devon County, the show was called off after heavy rain, Jerram was delighted to win with Take Two who was making his show ring debut. This quality Emperor Augustus four-year-old was bought from Hugh Dunlop.

Taking the hunter title at Devon was the reigning heavyweight hunter of the year Loughkeen Dancing Lord, the son of Crosstown Dancer again combining presence, movement and manners under the petite Claire Oliver.

Libby Cooke and David Reid-Scott’s Windsor champion Harley Foxtrot maintained their winning run in the worker ring, the pair producing a super round at a true hunting pace in sticky conditions. Warrington Show in Cheshire had an abundance of Irish-bred hunters heading their respective line-ups. Kate Waddington’s Devlish Rebel was not fazed by muddy conditions, going on to claim the tricolour.

This seven-year-old grey gelding has qualified for HOYS in October in the SEIB search for a star series as a riding club show horse.

Standing reserve was Chloe Ribbon’s middleweight winner Vantage Point, a 10-year-old by Le One out of a Clover Hill mare.

Standing reserve in the amateur division was Jayne Hurley with Cloneyhea Fortune, a seven-year-old Irish-bred mare by Arthurs Gold. The show hunter pony champion Knockmore Merrel Prince was also bred in Ireland, this cracking grey gelding also excelling in dressage classes for Jane Boyden.

On only her second outing, Aubane Sheila headed her small riding horse section, the Imperial Cavalier four-year-old going on to take the reserve for Victoria Timperley. Other Irish-bred winners at Warrington included Joanne Goostrey’s winning lightweight and cob champion Randalstown Brannigan who was recording his second tricolour in three days having also taken the title at Shropshire County.

In the working hunter ring, Willowtree Ovation produced his customary solid round to win the open class. The Golden Lariat eight-year-old was bought as a youngster at Goresbridge. The chesnut has been a Burghley Young Horse finalist, paraded hounds and point-to-points, takes the side-saddle and is a seasoned hunter with the Cheshire Forest hounds.
