WHILE celebrations continue throughout the county after their All Ireland hurling final victory, more titles were decided at Limerick Show last Sunday. Unfortunately, in a busy weekend for showing, this year’s show clashed with both Moate and Oughterard shows, however the Newell family laid down plans to attend both.

And their arrangements paid off when their Kilcahill Gemini won the still-coveted Limerick Lady final. Both she and Tom Casey’s reserve champion are by Financial Reward and Newell’s filly is from a line steeped in All Ireland champions, including her Colin Diamond dam Kilcahill Diamond, herself the Limerick Lady reserve champion six years ago.

John Roche’s former Limerick Lady champion Assagart Mistress returned to win the Jim Bolger-sponsored Matron title, confined to former ‘Ladies’ and reserve to Roche’s Kings Master mare was Derry Rothwell with another home-bred in the Crosstown Dancer-sired Greenhall Wishing Well.

Bolger has been a long-standing sponsor of the Tradtional Irish Horse Association classes, hosted at Limerick and also supported the traditional foal championship, won by Michael McCarthy’s Kilnagross Legend, by Spirit House.

At the same time as Kinard Showtime was crowned the ridden horse champion at Moate, his sire Derg Showtime won the TIHA Derby class for owner David Moran.

The last of this year’s ISA All Ireland Irish Draught young horse finals for fillies was won by Mayo owner Adrian Burke with his Gortfree Hero two-year-old, ahead of Mary Murphy’s reserve champion by DS Ballagh Bouncer.

In the Limerick Show championships, Katherine Bennett and John Hyde’s Ricardo Z-sired The Bally Girl won the ‘other Croker Cup’ awarded to the champion broodmare and Michael McCarthy’s winning streak continued when his filly won the Liam Meade memorial cup as the overall champion foal.

Margaret Jeffares’s Dublin filly champion Ballykelly Eva, by O.B.O.S Quality 004, won both the filly and overall young horse titles and in the ridden horse rings, it was Marilyn Bane’s small hunter class winner The Grey Rebel that took the championship.

The Ruttle family had a field day by first claiming the working hunter pony championship with Horse And Jockey Clasper, reserve champion at Dublin recently with daughter Carol on board.

Then Treowen Ranger added the mini pony title for young Nathan, followed by the Daresbury Cup, awarded to the leading Clare or Limerick owners in the pony classes.

Another Limerick champion as the showing year starts to wind down was Alex Cunneen’s show hunter pony, Chantilly Anchorman.
