THERE has been enormous interest in dressage events in Ireland at all levels so far this year with some events having to restrict entries such is the ever-growing enthusiasm for the discipline.
Jane Whitaker, Chair of Dressage Ireland executive committee, reports that many shows averaged over 120 entries across the regions so far this year.
“The 2017 season is off to a great start with regional shows being very well supported with many shows averaging over 120 entries. We are seeing a growth in membership and several new venues are proving very popular.
“Among our recent membership incentives include discounted membership package to members of other HSI affiliates and free first year registration of Irish Draught, Connemara and Irish-bred thoroughbreds,” said Whitaker.
Earlier this year, Irish Horse World reported how Dressage Ireland chairman Joe Reynolds wanted to “bust the elitism” perception out of dressage and threw open an invitation to “hairy ponies and coloured cobs” to join in dressage events nationwide.
Dressage Ireland will be hosting its Winter Finals at Cavan on April 1st-2nd next with 12 judges - six British List 1 judges and six Dressage Ireland judges - engaged for the event.
They will watch 140 riders and 164 horses doing a total of 410 tests over the two packed days.
Proof that the discipline has a wide appeal across the age groups can readily be seen with the youngest rider being just eight years old right up to mature years.
WIDE RANGE
Meanwhile, the youngest horse is just five right up to 22 for the veteran mounts.
Classes range from Preliminary to Grand Prix, Para and specific classes for younger riders in the new Trailblazers sections, introduced at this season’s regional shows as a pathway to national competitions for younger riders. These classes will be on Sunday morning and feature the under 16s for the Junior Trailblazers while the 16-21 age bracket caters for the Senior Trailblazers.
Whitaker added: “Also making a difference is our new rider categories, introduced for 2017, which aim to create a fairer division between amateur and more experienced riders.
“Meanwhile, on the Saturday evening at Cavan, there’ll be a return of the hugely popular fun Table Quiz after the prize giving. Professional photographers Equus Pix will be on hand and there will be some trade stands including Dressage by Design on site for the weekend as well as new Dressage Ireland merchandise including soft shell jackets, gilets, hoodies and hats available,” said Whitaker.
