SOUTH Munster Dressage ran a super show in fair weather last Sunday at Millstreet’s marvellous Green Glens derby arena, by kind permission of the Duggan family. If the flags had been flying, it could have been an International show with the lovely surface and plenty of space.

Pony eventing trainer Sue Smallman took a break from coaching to land a brace of wins on the impressive Westphalian-bred Eicke, owned by Alex Baradi, scoring 70% from judge Vida Tansey in the inter 1 competition, and 67% in the Prix St. Georges, which made the trip from Co Tipperary worthwhile.

Overall, it was a good day for Tipperary riders, with Elizabeth Frayling on Variant H scoring 67% to place second to Smallman in the inter 1, and winning the advanced 102 on D’Artagnan V.

Galway visitor Alana Cazabon also had a double of red rosettes, with wins in both FEI Junior and FEI team tests with the elegant Connemara Carn Verdon Boy, who is owned by Joan and Deirdre Geoghegan from Oughterard.

South Munster rider and development squad member Angela Lyons had a good day, gaining three qualifying scores with the talented Woodcroft Santa Cruz in the para and elementary classes.

A novice horse to catch judge Betty O’Neill’s eye was Marian Slattery’s Ballylarkin Mikeo on 70%, while the best preliminary score went to Sean Hodnett on Little Miss Scarlett.

A return date to the venue was requested by many.
