TRIBUTES have been paid in memory of Commandant Kevin Croke, who died last week after a long illness.

Kevin, who owned Delour Valley Stud at Mountrath, Co Laois, had a lengthy and successful career in the Irish Defence Forces, which culminated with the post of Officer Commanding of the 9 Infantry Battalion. He also served overseas in Lebanon with UNFIL on two separate tours. Kevin is survived by his wife Colette, his children Yvonne, Elaine and Kevin and his extended family.

Alongside his career in the Defence Forces, Kevin was a hugely respected figure in Irish equestrian sport, and made an outstanding contribution to endurance riding both in Ireland and internationally. A long-standing member and former chairman of Horse Sport Ireland’s Endurance Committee, Kevin’s contribution extended beyond Ireland, with a distinguished career as an FEI official, including as a Level 4 Judge, Technical Delegate and Chief Steward.

He also served as Chef d’Equipe for Irish teams at European Championships and World Equestrian Games, and was instrumental in the organisation and development of endurance events in Ireland. Kevin’s knowledge, commitment and passion for horses and equestrian sport earned him the respect of colleagues and athletes throughout the community. Despite the diagnosis that led to his final illness, Kevin continued to attend and officiate at equestrian events both at home and abroad.

Horse Sport Ireland, the IDHBA and Endurance Ireland were among the bodies to acknowledge Kevin’s contribution to equestrianism in recent days. Endurance Ireland released a statement which read: “Kevin was a staunch supporter of endurance, not only in Ireland but throughout Europe and Asia, and we were privileged to have him as a great supporter and friend of Endurance Ireland. His knowledge, commitment and passion for the sport will be greatly missed. His passing is a huge loss to his family and friends, but also to the wider international Endurance community.”
