GARDAÍ have confirmed an investigation is ongoing following the hit and run accident involving a horse and rider in Kilmoganny, Co Kilkenny on September 21st.

Keith Fitzpatrick from Kilkenny was out for a hack, when he was hit head on by a speeding car.

“The left-hand side of my head hit where the windscreen meets the top of the car and I completely dented it there. I then went over the car, and I went through the back windscreen with my right shoulder,” Fitzpatrick explained.

“Not only am I lucky to be alive, we are all absolutely devastated that we lost the lovely five-year-old horse I was riding for an eldery friend, who is deeply saddened! All I can say is, as traumatic as it all was, I am lucky to be alive, and it would have been 10 times worse if it was a child or a person walking.

“I am currently recovering after having surgery, but still very, very sore and currently still attending Cork University Hospital weekly for treatment.”

In response to a question from The Irish Field, a Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a road traffic collision involving a car that collided with a horse and a rider on Carrick Road, Kilmoganny, Co Kilkenny shortly before 4pm on September 21st, 2026.

“The car failed to remain at the scene. The vehicle was recovered a short distance away from the scene. The rider of the horse, a male aged in his 20s, was taken to University Hospital Waterford to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. Investigation is ongoing.”
