DOMINIC Furnell finished as the highest-placed Irish rider at the Longines Lumuhlen CCI5* in Germany last weekend, when he was 12th with the Thomas Jones-owned and bred Irish Sport Horse Ivanhoe (Wounderwall x Cruising), pictured on page 91. The class was won by Britain’s Caroline Harris and D. Day, who recorded their second win at this level, having also topped the podium at Pau in 2024. Emily King finished second with the French-bred Valmy Biats, while the Anthony Smyth-bred Irish Sport Horse Shanroe Cooley (Dallas x Condios) was third for the USA’s Boyd Martin.

Sian Coleman was the better of the two Irish entries in this class after the first phase, when she scored 36.8 with Gina Heaps’ Irish Sport Horse gelding Carrowgar Je T’Aime Max (Je T’Aime Flamenco x Coolcorran Cool Diamond) to lie 13th. Furnell’s first phase score of 39.4 left him in 18th, but his clear round cross-country for 39.2 time faults saw him climb to 12th, a position he maintained, despite rolling two poles on the final day. Coleman incurred 20 penalties cross-country at the influential 12B, as well as time faults, but rose to eventual 13th after adding just six faults in the show jumping phase.

The Mallow-based rider also finished 25th of the 51 starters in the CCI4*-S Messmer Trophy at the venue, this time riding Maurice Coleman’s Irish Sport Horse Kilroe Frolic (Cavalier Lands x OBOS Quality), who was second at Thoresby earlier this year. Germany’s former Olympic champion Julia Krajewski scored a one-two here, topping the podium with the 12-year-old gelding Uelzener’s Nickel on a score of 27.7. Her runner-up was the Nick Cousins-bred Irish Sport Horse Tullabeg Platinum (Dignified Van’T Zorgvliet x Cult Hero), who jumped an impeccable clear round in the show jumping phase to finish on 34.4.
