CLIFDEN is preparing for a landmark celebration next week, from August 19th–22nd, as the Connemara Pony Show marks its 100th Anniversary.
The Show returns to its home at the Clifden Showgrounds in the heart of Connemara under the guidance of the newly formed Connemara Pony Show-Clifden committee of Mary Coyne (Chair), John Sweeney, Karen Mannion, Terrence O’Toole, Cllr. Eileen Mannion, and Cllr. Gerry King. This year’s event will see over 700 ponies compete for the largest prize fund in the show’s history.
The festivities open on Tuesday with free entry to the Showgrounds, featuring riding demonstrations by Connemara Therapeutic Riding followed by the All-Ireland Three-Year-Old Loose Jumping Championship in association with Horse Sport Ireland. That evening, all are invited to the 100th show welcome reception in the show marquee at 6pm. This is a free community gathering with drinks and nibbles.
From Wednesday, the action intensifies with the traditional in-hand classes taking place across Rings 1 and 2 in association with Sweeney Oil, ahead of the coveted Supreme Championship.
The week continues with ridden classes taking place on Thursday, in association with Galway County Council, while performance is order of the day on Friday with working hunter classes in association with Carey Construction and the Puissance, sponsored by Aloga Equestrian. The iconic Parade of Champions will see winners of the week parade through the town streets on Friday evening.
Throughout this year’s event, Clifden’s market square will buzz with street traders, local food, crafts, and family entertainment. Evening entertainment includes live music, the Win A Home in Clifden prize draw, and two highly-anticipated book launches: 100 Champions by Phyllis Jones and The Clifden Connemara Pony Show 2002–2023 by Susanne Lehmann.
