Madam,
The Irish Masters of Foxhounds Association (IMFA) warmly welcomes last week’s decision by Dail Eireann to reject the Bill seeking to prohibit regulated hare coursing.
We thank the TDs from across the political spectrum, who took the time to engage with the evidence, listen to all sides of the debate and make their decision following careful consideration of the facts. Whatever their political affiliation, those who opposed this Bill recognised the importance of proportionate, evidence-based legislation and respected the democratic process.
The IMFA was proud to campaign alongside the Irish Coursing Club throughout this process. We congratulate the ICC, its officers, affiliated clubs and volunteers on the professional and determined manner in which they presented their case. Their work ensured that factual information remained at the centre of the debate.
We also extend our sincere thanks to our own members throughout the country. From meeting public representatives and writing to TDs to engaging respectfully with local communities, your efforts made a real difference.
The unity shown by countryside organisations and rural communities during this campaign has been remarkable and demonstrates what can be achieved when people work together with a common purpose.
Today’s result is significant beyond the issue of hare coursing itself. It sends a clear message that proposals affecting lawful, regulated rural activities must be judged on evidence rather than emotion, and that long-established traditions deserve fair and balanced consideration within the legislative process.
We recognise that views on hare coursing differ, and we respect the rights of others to hold those views. We hope that following today’s decision, there can be greater emphasis on constructive dialogue, mutual respect and policies grounded in evidence.
The IMFA remains committed to protecting Ireland’s rural heritage, supporting responsible countryside activities, promoting high standards of animal welfare, and working with fellow organisations to ensure that our traditions continue to operate responsibly and within the law.
Today is an encouraging day for our members, for the Irish Coursing Club, and for rural Ireland. We thank everyone who contributed to this campaign and look forward to continuing to work together in the interests of our countryside, our communities and our shared heritage.
Yours etc.,
Pat Hayes, Chairman IMFA
