MADAM,
I AM writing in response to your article titled ‘Criticism is not disloyalty’ published in the June 28th, 2025, edition of The Irish Field. As a long-time member of Showjumping Ireland, I feel compelled to express my outrage at the arrogance and lack of understanding displayed by HSI in their recent correspondence with Mullingar Equestrian Centre.
My interpretation of HSI’s letter suggests an expectation that Mullingar should bow to their demands and withdraw their comments in order to maintain a relationship with the organisation. Instead of seeking constructive dialogue, it looks like HSI has attempted to silence those who aim to elevate our sport.
Constructive criticism, when offered with the intent of fostering improvement, is essential for any organisation that aspires to thrive. HSI’s apparent dismissal of valuable feedback raises critical concerns about their commitment to the very community they purport to represent. The dedication and hard work of local equestrian centres like Mullingar deserve recognition and respect, not belittlement.
I regularly interact with commendable individuals within HSI, and I want to emphasise that my criticism is not a reflection of their efforts or intentions. HSI need a serious review of where they are within the industry.
Yours etc,
Gerard Campbell
