What are the standouts from the 2025 Show? Well first of all, there was a certain air of nervousness heading into the show with the ongoing construction at the RDS and what impact it might have on the atmosphere. The general consensus across the grounds was that it made little different to the buzz around and, actually, the North Stand with it’s high tribunes added something different to the Main Arena.
On the opening day, there were some exhibitors - and spooky horses - in the showing rings that were unhappy with the sight of machinery, but that was rectified on the first evening when they were covered up further. The RDS team continued to work late into the evenings to make sure everything ran smoothly.
One of the main talking points, and reflected on this week’s cover, was the huge success of the female riders. While men and women compete on an equal footing in equestrian sport, we can’t but acknowledge the incredible achievements of Britain’s Rachel Proudley who became the first female winner of the Defender Puissance in 61 years and did it with ease. American powerhouse Laura Kraut then went on to produce a standout ride of her life in Sunday’s Rolex Grand Prix to take that home, becoming the first female winner since 2011.
A special mention for our own Niamh McEvoy who continues to set the standard for the ladies in Ireland. She is an exceptional talent, winning six classes over the course of the week. She rides with incredible feel and can turn her hand to any horse. She didn’t have an easy ride to win the 1.50m Dublin Stakes with Flora du Mesnil but made it look flawless.
Finally, another leading lady was Fiona Sheridan who stepped out from behind the scenes and into the role of Horse Show Director and made the 150th show a huge success on her first year despite the extra challenges. Roll on 2026!
