IN spite of school and college commitments at this time of year, the classes for young riders at the one-day event in Grove last Sunday were well-filled and very competitive.

In the CNCJ*, where those best placed after dressage had problems with the narrow palisade (10c) after the mound or, if going the direct route, the second of the right-angled rails at 16 and 17, Co Westmeath’s Sofie Walshe completed on her first phase score to win with the thoroughbred gelding Kinsau.

There were 22 starters in that class and just three less in the Gain Horse Feeds EI100J where, again benefitting from a double clear, the honours went to Zara Nelson riding the home-bred OLS Inis Flaith.

Just seven combinations lined out for the CNCP** where the easy winner from Newmarket, Co Cork was Zara Burke Ott on board the Connemara Aille Fountain Breeze.

Waterford’s Kym Jolly led from start to finish when landing the EI100P with the skewbald gelding Silverspring Custard.

Finally, having gained experience as a member of the United Branch of the Irish Pony Club, Midleton’s Sarah Rohan (12) made a winning Eventing Ireland debut with Cottage Cat Baloo in the Brett Bros Callan EI90P class.
