STAGED in far more horse friendly conditions than those encountered in Tokyo, last weekend’s Sema Lease Kilguilkey International Horse Trials was voted an all-round success. The one-off fixture which was scheduled to replace the cancelled Camphire showcase, featured four well-filled short format classes, and delivered a good balance of results.

This was aided by the superb underfoot conditions, which Joseph Murphy described as being ‘just amazing’ and Michael Ryan as ‘unbelievably good’. Indeed, despite heavy rainfall on Thursday night and during the day on Friday, Danny Dulohery decided that the ground could still take more water, so he spread a further 200,000 gallons early on Saturday morning. These efforts were massively appreciated by the riders, as was the decision to shorten the schedule to have the entire event done and dusted by Saturday afternoon.

“We had originally planned to run some long format classes,” explained Dulohery.

“In the end however, the demand wasn’t strong enough and having consulted with those who had entered, all were more than happy to change. This also resulted in a change to the timetable, and we could see no reason to delay things for another day.”

Dulohery closed by thanking all his sponsors, riders and volunteers, especially the title sponsor Richard Ames’ Sema Lease and Global Event Horses.
