TOP British event rider William Fox-Pitt has made some progress over the weekend and is reported to be conscious and breathing on his own but remains very ill in a French hospital following a fall while competing at Le Lion d'Angers.

A statement on the rider's website and also on British Eventing's website said today: "William has made progress over the weekend; today he is conscious, breathing on his own and communicating with his family and doctors, however he is still very ill. He and his family are very grateful for all the support and messages, it is hugely appreciated. Further progress is going to take time, so please continue to respect the family’s privacy."

A statement on Fox-Pitt's website on Friday said: "William remains stable and comfortable and the hospital will make no further announcement until early next week.

Thank you again for all your huge support. Alice and all the family are really grateful."

Fox-Pitt (46) has been in intensive care at Angers hospital since the fall on October 17th last at an owl hole fence on the cross-country at Le Lion. He has been kept sedated and suffered head trauma in the fall. His horse Reinstated was not hurt in the incident.

The world number three eventing rider was competing in the seven-year-old CCI** class at the FEI WBFSH world championships for young eventing horses at the time.
