THE Irish Sport Horse Studbook won the breed competition on a score of 135 penalties thanks to the exploits of I Spye, DSL The Entertainer and John The Bull who were fourth, fifth and ninth respectively in the CCI1* for six-year-olds.

I Spye is owned by his New Zealand rider Jesse Campbell who sourced the Harlequin du Carel gelding through Vere Phillips. Under the name Lates Harry, the bay was first produced in this country by Kilkenny show jumper Eddie Moloney who qualified him for the four-year-old classes at Dublin in 2015.

I Spye was bred in Co Tipperary by Thomas Ryan out of the Lombardo mare Lombardo Corner whose main consort in 15 years at stud has been the Dutch Warmblood stallion Olympic Lux by whom she had six foals.

There were 22 ISH progeny at these FEI world championships for young event horses with another well-placed six-year-old being Youve Got The Lux who finished 10th under Britain’s Hayden Hankey.

This Lux Z mare, who only stated eventing this year having previously been show jumped lightly by Vinny Byrne, was bred by Jane Darragh out of the Carrolls Flight mare Valeska who evented and show jumped herself.

There were only four Deutches Sportpferd-registered horses at Le Lion but three of them did enough to secure second place in the breed championship on a score of 144.6.

PENALTIES

The pedigree of Bob Chaplin, who was partnered by Australia’s Paul Tapner to finish second in the six-year-old class is reviewed elsewhere in these pages. Others to contribute to the score were the Rapolino gelding Rafiki, who placed 13th in the CCI1* for Belgium’s Geert Adriaensen, and the Conthargos mare Jadore Moi who, with 13 show jumping penalties, was 17th in the CCI2* for seven-year-olds under Germany’s Sophie Leube.

Just beaten into third (148.7) was the Selle Français studbook which had 11 representatives at the championships, the three counting scores coming from the six-year-old division where two competed for France.

The higher-placed of that pair was the Thomas Carlile-ridden Birmane, a daughter of Vargas de Ste Hermelle who finished third, while the L’Arc de Triomphe Bois Margot gelding Better Win was 11th under Mathieu Lemoine. Bambino de l’Ilatte, a gelding by Orlando, was 29th in the hands of Chile’s Jonathan Cisterna Lariviere.
