THE final leg of the Irish Sport Horse Studbook series was held last Sunday at Lisgarvan where just four horses started in the CNC1* for six-year-olds.

The winner was the Kroongraaf gelding Xuanatu (35.3) who recorded the only double clear under his owner Katie Prowse as Patrick Byrne picked up a costly four show jumping penalties with Anchorman who had led after Susan Patterson’s judging of the dressage phase (33).

Xuanatu, who is one of three horses Prowse is competing at the national dressage championships in Cavan this weekend, was purchased as a yearling and, while not advertised for sale, could be prised from the owner if a good offer was made for the chesnut.

The winner was bred in Co Laois by Joseph Delaney out of the Clover Hill mare Newtown Heather Rose.

Ratoath engineer Stephen McAvinchey and his fiancée Christina Duffy appear to have a smart sort in Newtownbarry Lucky Star (21.8) who recorded an all-the-way success in the EI100 division for five-year-olds with Ian Cassells finishing second on Bridget McGing’s home-bred Pointilliste mare Diamond Pointe (26.5).

The winner, who was bred in Bunclody by Alice Norton, is a bay mare by Lux Z out of Newtownbarry Flying Star (by Ghareeb) and was purchased by her present connections as a three-year-old at Goresbridge. She is kept with the Glynn family at Killossery Lodge Stud.

Rider McAvinchey, who missed some of the season with a broken ankle, said of Newtownbarry Lucky Star: “When we saw her we liked everything about her and we now find she excels in all three phases.”

The result was a lot closer in the four-year-old section but, for the second week in a row, the all-the-way winner was Fraser Duffy riding Carol Gee’s Sligo Candy Boy gelding Fernhill Candy Crush (27.5).

Michael McNally finished second with Pat Wall’s consistent Baltydaniel Silver Fox gelding John A (28.8).
