BRIAN Morrison emerged with yet another smart new horse to lead the four runners in the EI110 (O) at Crecora (3) by a distance.

Teaming up with the 10-year-old Global Jagiello, a gelding he had sourced from England just three weeks earlier, Morrison produced the sole double clear round (27.5) to head Cathal Daniels with Sammy Davis Junior (41.1), who was also clear but slower, and Blathnaid Boyd with What Else (52.9).

German-bred by Czar, and lightly competed in both his native country and England, the winner is, according to his rider, “a very smart junior or young rider prospect.”

It was also good to note Cathal Daniels and Sammy Davis Junior making their seasonal debut. The 2018 Camphire victors cruised around happily, and although making no effort to achieve the time allowed, will undoubtedly have pleased connections.

The restricted sector was a far more competitive affair, with 31 runners going to post. Fraser Duffy and Erin had led the field after dressage, but having picked up an expensive 20 penalties in the country, opened the door for Daniel Alderson riding Richard Ames’ home-bred RCA Royal Summer.

A six-year-old by Royaldik, the gelding stands nearly 18hh, and has taken time to mature. “He’s still a big baby,” remarked the rider. “He has just found his balance, and at the same time his jump. The show jumping was quite twisty today and the time was tight, so I was more than pleased with him.

“In the country he was brave and honest, so this has set us up well for a trip to the Somerford International in Cheshire in two weeks’ time.”

Delivering one of a very few faultless rounds, Daisy Duggan filled second with LCC King Julien, from host Dominic Furnell (Horlpiep).
