SECTION A of the five-year-old class at the Young Event-Horse Series qualifier at Scarteen on Wednesday was won by Richard Ames’s Ballyvillane Obos with whom rider Daniel Alderson will be paying a return visit to Dublin.

It’s been a busy time for Alderson who had two rides, both well-placed, at last week’s Tattersalls International Horse Trials and he, like many others, not all of whom are riders, would benefit from a longer break before the start of the qualifiers.

Not too surprisingly a son of OBOS Quality 004, Ballyvillane Obis was bred near Nenagh by Tim Gleeson out of the Young Convinced mare Gleesons Coolcorran. He has competed in three EI100 classes but has this weekend off as Alderson concentrates on other young horses at Belline Equestrian.

On his way to winning this section, Ballyvillane Obos jumped clear, as did Monbeg Libertine who also booked a Dublin ticket when finishing second. A gelding by Womanizer out of a Chill Out mare, this fellow was ridden by Fraser Duffy for Carol Gee who purchased the grey about a month ago.

He was previously owned by Marti Rudd who competed with him in the Burghley young horse final last year having qualified at Tattersalls July Show. Rudd thinks highly of Monbeg Libertine who she purchased privately from Mikey Callaghan in Co Clare in 2016 shortly after which he finished seventh in the three-year-old loose performance championship at Dublin.

Duffy also secured an RDS ticket in Section B where he finished second on Fernhill Candy Crush, while Sarah Ennis booked a now customary place at Dublin when third with husband Niki Potterson’s home-bred Stellor Quick Change. Both of these horses competed at the Dublin 4 showgrounds last August.

Ian Cassells rode the winner, Master Point, for Bridget McGing who bred the Pointilliste bay out of her international two-star mare Chikari. This combination have competed in two EI100 classes this season, finishing second last time out at Rosanna (2). Cassells has Master Point entered in today’s ISH Studbook EI100 class for five-year-olds at Killossery Lodge Stud.
