THE final leg of the Pegus Horse Feeds mini one-day event league at Killossery Lodge Stud took place last Thursday with professional riders from Northern Ireland joining some of their Wexford counterparts in bringing out young horses.

However, it was locally-based Orla Cassidy who secured the novice league honours with Maureen Dwyer’s good dressage horse Merrywell Cavalier. The six-year-old Cavalier Two For Joy gelding, who was bred by Kevin Geraghty out of an Ard Grandpa mare, completed on his flatwork score of 28 penalties to win Thursday’s class.

Behind the bay, second place was divided between the Jamie Nolan-ridden grey Killossery Kismit and the Luke Drea-partnered Rock Gift, a six-year-old Guidam mare whose dam, Rock Cult Lady (by Cult Hero), is a full-sister to Jonelle Price’s four-star ride The Deputy.

Gillian Martin-Smith led the pre-novice class after dressage on a score of 29 penalties but had to share the honours when she had a pole down with her six-year-old Tara Flight mare Palinka. The Co Kildare rider has recently started eventing the homebred chesnut who she first brought out on the showing and working hunter circuits.

Completing on her flatwork mark of 33 to divide first place was Katriona Madden riding Non Intimate, with whom she competes in EI100 amateur classes. The 14-year-old thoroughbred gelding, who won a maiden point-to-point in 2008, is by Courtship out of a Tale Quale mare.

The pre-novice league was won by Jessica Cudden and Killossery Coogan, winners of Thursday’s five-year-old section. Cudden, who works at the north Co Dublin yard, finished the day on her dressage score of 26 with Laura Glynn’s bay mare.

Lucy Hanna slotted into second on her first phase score of 31 with Greannanstown Cougar, a bay gelding by Cougar who has 14 SJI points and also events.

There was a very close result in the intro class, which was won on their dressage mark of 31 by Emma Jackson and Ardglen Diva Dancer, who were also successful in the four-year-old class at Annaharvey the previous Sunday. The chesnut mare is by Ghareeb out of the Irish Draught Ardglen Star Dancer (by Crosstown Dancer).

Dividing the spoils in second on 32 penalties were Angela Flynn and her six-year-old dun mare Tequila Dun, a daughter of the Connemara Silver Heaven out of a thoroughbred mare by Good Thyne, and Luke Drea riding Cruise Cadette.

In finishing second, Drea won the intro league with Brendan McChesney’s five-year-old French Buffet gelding who is out of a Cruising mare out of a Ballinvella mare.

Hope O’Dwyer landed the three-runner Pony Club class on the skewbald gelding Cut Above with whom she has been competing in EI intro events.

Pegus Horse Feeds’ Declan Cullen was in attendance on Thursday to present the prizes. He expressed the company’s delight in how the series had been received and hoped it would go on to be bigger and better next year.

The Glynn family is holding a one-off mini event at Killossery on Thursday, September 11th in aid of the David Foster injured riders’ fund and Aware, while a contribution will also be made to the North Leinster region.
