IVOR and Olive Broderick’s search for a stallion with an international record at five-star shows and an impressive pedigree and damline ended last December when the striking Tyson arrived at Kylemore Stud.

Through their good friend, Paul Hendrix of the world famous Stal Hendrix, they were recommended to the Thijjsen family as the perfect match for their Numero Uno stallion.

Tyson is now standing at Kylemore Stud’s Loughrea base, which is also a busy AI centre.

A strong damline is one of the key factors in producing consistent performers and Tyson’s dam, Kicky Queen, has one. This Elite Sport mare is related to a collection of performers competing up to 1.60m level, including Tadmus, Patries and Nirvana. This Voltaire mare is the latest in a line of Prok, Keur and Ster Prestatie dams that have produced winners across Europe and the United States.

Tyson enjoyed a long career at international level, including multiple winning Nations Cup appearances and Grand Prix wins. Both Paul Hendrix, who sourced Tyson for the Brodericks, and his Dutch international rider Leon Thijjsen rate this stallion highly and the characteristics he can bring to Irish mares, including his excellent jumping technique, outstanding canter and will to win every class.

Tyson joins a group of performance-bred stallions at Kylemore Stud, including Womanizer, one of the leading sires on the Irish circuit last year and sire of the exciting prospect Alberta Mist.

Paul Hendrix on Tyson:

Tyson was one of the best show jumping horses in Europe, a very important horse. His mindset to win a class was number one.

The jump was there from day 1, he was the Dutch champion as a six and seven-year-old and was jumping Grand Prix level as an eight-year-old. He was always competing in Nations Cups and Grand Prix classes, an amazing horse.

Why I think he will suit Irish mares is he has the technique and unbelievable ability. Numero Uno is one of the top sires in the world and to get a son that’s proven all the way doesn’t happen all the time.

His owners had no interest in breeding and many people wanted to buy Tyson. I know the Brodericks, all the family works very hard and I told Ivor you cannot find a horse with a better record than Tyson. When Leon gave Ivor the okay, the deal was done in two minutes. If you see Tyson jumping once, you will never forget him.

Leon Thijssen on Tyson:

I had Tyson for 12 and a half years since I bought him as a rising three-year-old. For me, it’s really important that Tyson stays as a horse that goes out in the field and I have a good feeling about the Brodericks.

The first big competition you win is always good and actually the nicest win was the Nations Cup two years ago in Aachen.

He was never afraid of a big fence. When you did Dublin or Aachen, he was never afraid of a big fence, just ultra careful and his front legs were always quick over a fence.

When you sit on him, he’s a machine and has an unbelievable canter. Also, his mother line has produced jumpers, so many of them doing big stuff, that are all related to Tyson.
