Last year’s top lot: Gerry Dillon’s The Little Farrier, 12 year-old 148cm mare by Josie Jump €20,000.

SETTING the ball rolling for 2026, the year’s first sport horse sale is due to take place at Cavan next Thursday. The catalogue of 127 lots features a number of horses with form and, following last year’s strong trade for ponies, it comes as no surprise to note that nearly 50 of those holding entries are from the smallest of the species. Among them is the exciting 148cm mare Ballymagans High on Candy (Lot 22), who, with 126 SJI points is a lively candidate for the RDS this season. Another is the schoolmaster 128cm pony Lambay Satisfaction (Lot 34), while showing enthusiasts could be tempted by the proven and versatile Coco Carel (Lot 28). Moving on to the horses, the Grade A jumper Charlie Goodwin could sell well, as could any of the selection of proven hunters and riding stock with varied form.

Looking at the list of covering sires, Vivant van de Heffinck leads by a distance. With six progeny on offer, he is followed by Conticco (3), while Dignified Van’t Zorgvliet, Sligo Candy Boy and Treehoo Sunshine have two apiece.

Ponies

Lot 6 Prince Charming, reg 10 yo b g 122cm (breeding unrecorded). Standing out among the early lots is Prince Charming, a diminutive schoolmaster with mileage in a variety of disciplines. In the last named activity, he has competed at the Royal Windsor pony club games and, more recently, he represented Ulster in the mounted games final at Barnadown last season. His love, however, lies with show jumping, where he has previously competed at local shows up to 80cm and jumped under SJI rules last year.
