Last year’s top lot: Regula Wassmer’s Barbossa Vom Weihergut, six-year-old gelding by Baltic VDL (dam by Canto) €20,000

TWELVE months ago, an exceptionally strong demand for riding horses resulted in one of Cavan’s strongest sales of the year, and Wednesday’s catalogue promises more of the same. Highlighted by two young grade A jumping ponies, and supported by a sizeable collection of horses with competition form, the 161 lots also feature some attractively-bred Irish Draughts, Connemaras and traditionally-bred all-rounders.

Looking through the list of covering sires, Sligo Candy Boy once again leads the way, but this year shares popularity with Vittorio. Both have four progeny apiece, while other notables include Conticco (3), the Connemara stallion Caheross Duke (3) and the perennial favourite Vivant Van de Heffinck (3).
