NEXT week’s two-day performance sale rounds off a busy month at Cavan, and offers an interesting catalogue of proven and potential performers.

Highlighted among the entries is a selection of hunters and high-class competition horses, as well as the usual offering of ponies. Among these are several grade A jumping ponies, as well as first ridden ponies and schoolmasters.

The late Capitalist (HOLST) leads the list of covering sires with four progeny forward, while the thoroughbred French Buffet joins Baltimore, Cougar, Huntingfield Rebel, Mermus R, Porsch and Womanizer with three apiece.

PONIES

Lot 1 Katies Tinkerbell, reg 14 yo b m 128cms. The first lot to come under the hammer is a show jumping schoolmistress with 111 SJI points. She has also competed in a range of other activities including pony club games, cross-country and hunting.

Lot 2 Woodgrove Blue Gem, reg 9 yo gr g 128cms by Nefyn Zeus (dam by Sparnbrook Blue Gem). This eye-catcher won the RDS equitation qualifier last year, and is a grade A jumping pony with 323 SJI points. He has jumped tracks up to 1.10m and is thought to have a big future.

Lot 11 Dunmore Dante, reg 9 yo gr g 145cms by Thunderball (dam by Kingstown Boy). The uncomplicated Dunmore Dante has been in the same home for five years, and has been shared by a mother and daughter. He has competed in AIRC competitions at intermediate level and carried his younger rider through the Pony Club tests. He has also hunted for four years with the Donegal Harriers, and has participated in polocrosse, dressage and showing.

Lot 12 Bellspark Amie, reg 8 yo gr m 148cms. This useful performer won the Northern Ireland 1m championships last year, and was placed fifth in the 1.10m Grand Prix at Cavan. She has also attended pony camp and qualified for the Cheshire Pony Club novice championships in England, where she was placed third with the North Down team.

COMPETITION HORSES

Lot 29 Clone Clover, reg 10 yo b m 168cms by Captain Clover (dam by Ginger Dick). One of several smart competition horses to sell on the first day, Clone Clover is the winner of 157 SJI points. She has competed in classes up to 1.30m level, and was in the finals of the IHB series as a five-year-old. She has also clocked up some good form at Hickstead, where she was placed fourth in the novice jumping derby. She is thought to be an ideal prospect for children on horses, young riders and juniors.

Lot 30 Tomgar Kaleidoscope, reg 9 yo ch g 168cms by Lucky Gift (dam by Golden Trump). This traditionally-bred gelding has competed up to CCI** level this season with a young rider, gaining 18 EI points to date. He is a half-brother to a number of graded performers including the British-based three-star event horse Westwinds Eclipse, and the German-campaigned two-star event horse Tactic.

Lot 40 CAFRE Highlight, reg 7 yo b m 165cms by Limmerick out of ISHD First Light (by Concorde). Highlight is a very-well related mare, with both competition and paddock potential. She has been show jumped to 1.20m level, and is easy in all respects. She is a half-sister to the top 1.60m performer ISHD Dual Star (by Quickstar), who recently won the Smartpak $25,000 Grand Prix under current rider Laura Chapot. This mare is also a half-sister to the promising four-year-old CAFRE First Light and is from the same dam’s line as the three-star event horse Private Heart and the two-star Herbst Golden Eclipse. A more recent sibling (2014) by OBOS Quality, sold for €4,000 at the recent Cavan Elite Foal Sale.

Lot 41 Coolafancy Clus Arrowhead, reg sk s 166cms by Like A Clu (dam by Hubbly Bubbly). Those looking for an entire could be interested in this colt with show jumping form. He is quiet in all respects, and has been competing on the Munster Grand Prix circuit this season, winning a total of 49 SJI points to date.

Lot 70 Balouboy Z, reg 5 yo ch g 170cms by Balougran Z (dam by Cavalier Royale). This well-bred gelding is showing great promise. He is currently jumping up to 1.20m level and is bred to excel in either sphere. His sire is by Baloubet du Rouet, while the dam Rosy Cavalier has produced several good performers. Balouboy Z is a half-brother to the event horse My Royal Touch, recently placed in the CCI*** at Blenheim, and also to Premier Clover Royale who represented Italy at Le Lion d’Angers last year. This gelding’s three-parts brother, a three-year-old colt by Balou du Rouet appears later in the catalogue as Lot 133.

Lot 86 Noreway Harry, reg 5 yo b g 168cms by Hannibal van Overis Z out of Noreway No Way (Courage). Noreway Harry was placed third in the Discovery Final at Millstreet last year and has since been placed up to 1.10m level. His dam is a sister to the 1.20m show jumper Kilmullen Chairlux (Holly Kenny) who won the five- year-old RDS qualifier at Barnadown. He is also from the family of Noreway Lass, a sister to Killard Orona ridden by Michael Duffy.

Lot 187 Lisdaraami, reg 6 yo b m 167cms by Touchdown (dam by Cavalier Royale). Lisdaraami has jumped at training shows and has schooled across the country. While she can further her competitive career, she also has broodmare value and is out of a full-sister to the international speed horse Castlepollard.

HUNTERS

Lot 77 Chester, reg 5 yo ch g 178cms by Silver Glider (dam by Golden Cliff). One of a number of proven hunters, Chester has hunted with the Ballymacad hounds. He is a big, brave, well-mannered horse, and is fit and ready to go.

Lot 166 Unnamed, reg 8 yo gr g 160cms by All The Diamonds (dam by Grey Macha). This fully registered Irish Draught gelding has hunted for three seasons and has also competed in unaffiliated jumping shows. 

Lot 184 Whitehill Ranger, reg 6 yo tri col g 168cms. A versatile, fully-warranted  gelding, Whitehill Rnger has hunted for the past two seasons and will cross any country. He has hunter trialled to open standard, has won 22 SJI points and competes at intermediate level at riding club.

THREE AND

FOUR -YEAR-OLDS

Lot 96 Ardnacashel Ramiros Choice, reg 4 yo b g 162cms by Ramiro B (dam by Amiro M). Homebred, this youngster has superb movement and an athletic jump. His dam evented to CNC* level and is from a prolific family of eventing and show jumping winners.

Lot 217 CMS Virginia, reg 4 yo b g 163cms by Baltimore (dam by Cavalier Royale). This well-related young horse has just been broken and is showing promise. His dam is a half-sister to the Olympic event horse Ballylynch Adventure, while other winners in the family include the American-based event horse Longfield Dougal.

Lot 225 Dexter C, reg 4 yo g by Hold Up Premier (dam by Cruising). This gelding will have competed at the Cavan Indoor Championships by time of sale. From a good family, he is a half-brother to the 1.40m show jumper Condi, while his dam Leaving Cruise Mount is a half-sister to the international show jumper Highland Cruiser.

Lot 227 Emperors Power, reg 4 yo ch g 175cms by Power Blade (dam by Creggan Emperor). One for the showmen could be this upstanding gelding who was placed second at Balmoral and was Supreme Champion at Ballymena.

Lot 232 Unnamed, reg 4 yo b g 168cms by Jack of Diamonds out of Go Brath (Cruising). By the dual purpose sire Jack of Diamonds, this gelding is out of a full-sister to the recently-retired international show jumper Mo Chroi. He is also from the family of the English-based event horse Hilltop Cruiser and the promising novice stallion Midnight Blue B.

Lot 246 unnamed, reg 3 yo gr g 168cms by Heritage Fortunus out of Canadian Flight (unrecorded). Probably the pick of the three-year-olds is this gelding out of Canadian Flight, winner of her six-year-old age class at the RDS. This lot is a half brother to the Grand Prix show jumper Co Ho Langara (by Guidam) and to the event horse Ardeo Cooley Dance.

CONNEMARAS

Lot 304 Benown Princess, reg dun f f by Moonlight Silver Shadow out of Realt an Spideal (by Abbeyfort). This attractively-bred filly foal won her class at Ardrahan show this year. She is a very smart athletic foal with good performance breeding on both side of her pedigree.

Lot 310 Keenaghan Commander, reg c f by Bobby Sparrow Blue out of Crossowen Ciara (by Kingstown Boy). One of the eye-catchers in Friday’s catalogue of Connemara ponies is this showing and performance-bred colt foal. His dam won the Connemara championship in 2007, while his grade A jumping sire won the purebred Puissance at Clifden in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Lot 335 Barravalley Tess, reg 3 yo gr f 148cms by Templebready Fear Bui out of Rosscon Fiona (by Bodenpark Finnard). This Class 1 filly carries the best of performance pedigrees on both the sire and dam’s lines.
