THE autumn sales action gathers pace and returns to Goresbridge next week where a three-day sport horse sale opens on Tuesday. For the third year in succession, the catalogue of 448 lots is lighter than the previous 12 months, but encouragingly the shortfall appears to be compensated by quality.
This year is notable for the large selection of three-year-olds on offer, and standing out among them is a special selection of 10 high-class show jumping entries. Selling on Wednesday afternoon, these youngsters were initially selected for the subsequently cancelled supreme sale of show jumpers, and their page in the catalogue is accompanied by a photograph and a full three generation pedigree. The 10 lots also have performance video footage, which can be viewed on line.
The remainder of the catalogue is filled with the usual mixed selection of ponies, older stock and four-year-olds. In keeping with the season, proven hunters stand out, as do the remaining selection of three-year-olds.
As he has done all year, the Kennedy brothers’ stallion OBOS Quality heads the stallion list by a distance. Represented by 27 lots, he stands out among the popular covering sires, while Harlequin du Carel (9) also remains a favourite. The sadly missed thoroughbred sire Robin de la Maison makes an impact with seven lots forward, just in front of the perennially likeable Ars Vivendi with six.
